Spend a full day truly immersed in the world of one of Italy’s oldest “reds” – Chianti. Your private driver will take you around this picturesque region to visit exclusive wineries. It is no wonder this is one of Best Tuscany Tours’s most sought-after experiences.
This exclusive full-day Tuscany wine tour is dedicated to Chianti and Tuscan wines, and in particular to the Chianti Classico.
Commencing from the client’s accommodation or central Florence location, it is then off to explore the picturesque Chianti Classico area of Tuscany in private transport with a dedicated driver-guide.
This Chianti wine tour includes a visit to two wineries, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
Being around 8 hours, there is ample time to dedicate to exploring the cellars, seeing the vineyards and enjoying the estate, all while surrounded by the picturesque Tuscan countryside.
As locals (and wine lovers), our knowledge ensures visits to only the best boutique wineries in the area. During each winery stop, it will be possible to have a wine tasting of the estates’ best offerings.
One important tradition in Tuscany is that wine is always served with food. In keeping with this long-held custom, it is possible to have us arrange lunch at one of the wineries or in a delicious local restaurant in one of the quaint Tuscan villages. There would then be time to explore the village itself. Being a customized, private tour, the choice is left up to our guests!
Chianti Classico wine is produced in one of the oldest wine-making areas in the region.
Indeed, many consider this much-loved red to be the father of all Tuscan wines.
Most of these are boutique, family-run estates following the ancient wine-producing traditions. Interestingly, not all of the wineries are open to the public, with most being upon appointment only.
The Chianti wine-producing area was initially delineated in the early 1700s. However, it was redrawn in the 1930s, being split into 7 smaller areas such as the Chianti Classico, Colli Senesi, Colli Fiorentini and Rufina zones to name a few.
It was at that time that most villages falling within the Chianti Classico area changed their name to identify themselves as part of this larger and arguably more prestigious wine area, such as Greve becoming ‘Greve in Chianti’. Wines produced under the Chianti Classico label must adhere to strict production regulations and are instantly recognizable by the Black Rooster symbol attached to the bottles.
The first official blend was formulated in the mid-1800s by Baron Bettino Ricasoli (who went on to become Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Italy), being 70% Sangiovese, 15% Malvasia Bianca and 15% Canaiolo.
In the 1990s, new wine regulations permitted Chianti Classico producers to increase the quantity of Sangiovese even up to 100%, although only 80% is today required to utilize the Black Rooster symbol.
So that this tour may be tailored to individual preferences, all food and wine tastings are additional, to be paid by guests directly on the day. This ensures our guests may experience the best of the area exactly as they wish. Tasting costs range from approximately € 25-40 per person, depending on location and tasting options.
