Super Tuscan Wine Tour. Sit back, relax and taste Bordeaux style wines on this guided private tour with your English-speaking driver.
An indulgent exploration of Italy’s stunning new-world wine production areas.
The day commences with a private driver collecting the group from their accommodation in Florence or surrounds. What follows is a drive of around 2 hours through the splendid Tuscan countryside towards the west coast of Italy. The destination is around the Bolgheri area in the comune of Castagneto Carducci, today famous for its great number of innovative wineries producing some of the world’s most beloved wines.
A total of two wineries will be visited throughout this Super Tuscan tour, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Guests will be able to select the wine-tasting options they wish, after having enjoyed a guided visit of the cellars and other areas of the estates. Lunch will be in Bolgheri, where guests may dine on local delicacies produced to perfectly pair with the regional wines.
In between will be a drive along the stunning roads bordered by olive groves and cypress trees, including the picturesque Bolgherese Province Road lined with over 3,000 trees.
The day concludes back at the guests’ accommodation in the early evening after a pleasant drive back towards Florence.
Italy is one of the world’s most historic and prestigious wine producing countries, being a traditional vinifier par excellence. Some estates, however, have applied the knowledge garnered throughout the centuries to an exciting new oenological approach. The results are a range of exhilarating new wines blending tradition with innovation, taking historically-grown varietals and merging them with newly-introduced vines plus experimenting with production and aging techniques that have resulted in exciting alternative flavors and bouquets.
The wines were greatly received internationally, being unofficially classified as Super Tuscans to distinguish them from the official Table Wine (Vino da Tavola) denomination that they otherwise fell under. A new official wine appellation was eventually created however – I.G.T. (Indicazione Geografica Tipica – Indication of Geographic Tipicity).
The biggest names in this innovative approach are arguably Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Antinori, however for those in the know, there are many other less-famous producers making equally marvelous blends.
So that this tour may be tailored to individual preferences, all food and wine tastings are additional, to be paid by guests directly on the day. This ensures our guests may experience the best of the region exactly as they wish. Tasting costs range from approximately € 40-120 per person, depending on location and tasting options. Reservations to wineries in this area need to be made in advance and are booked according to availability. Please advise if interested in specific wineries (for example Ornellaia or Antinori’s Guado al Sasso). However, alternative arrangements shall be made if the request locations are unavailable. The tour runs rain or shine.
The unique charm and ancient monuments of Assisi and Cortona are truly something to behold on this guided tour through the idyllic crossroads of the Tuscan and Umbrian countryside.
